Mr. Ryan is very serious about English. Seriously. Some families, in order
to avoid conflict, refuse to discuss religion or politics at the dinner
table; Mr. Ryan's family does not discuss poetry, fiction, and especially
science fiction writers of the early 13th century. The last time someone
offered an opinon on this, matters escalated quickly and had the police not
kicked the door down...well, Mr. Ryan prefers not to think about the
carnage of that evening. Suffice to say, pages were ripped, bindings were
broken, and similes were hurled like knives. Bad puns were used. There was
some hyperbole. The children had to leave the room when the metaphors
started exploding. In a final irony, the cops wrote everyone up, poorly.
Word.
My students will become life-long learners. They will read books and write
interesting prose until they're too old to see and too weak to lift either
book or pen. They will smile when this happens, for they will have done all
they wished to do in this life. Well, except for that kid who actually
thought he would be president one day.
